food drives and the spontaneous donations of individual members
of the community provide most of the mainstays of The Salvation
Army’s Food Pantry during the year. However, much more is
needed for the Christmas give-a-ways.
So,
throughout the months of November and December each year, The Salvation
Army actively seeks donations of canned and packaged foods from
school and church groups, businesses, service organizations and
the general public. Schools and students are one of the most vigorous
collection groups for Christmas support.
Traditionally,
the Army places food orders and, from its cash donations, pays for
fresh foods such as turkey and ham, potatoes, celery or carrots,
milk, butter, bread and fruit. Some donors choose to give a cash
donation to cover the cost of all items in a single category, such
as all milk.
This “Food
Basket” then is supplemented with the donated cans and dried
food packages. The Army strives to give as near a mix of traditional
foods as possible: canned soups, green beans and corn, yams, stuffing
mixes, fruits, gelatins, Christmas candy.
If donations
of cash and foods allow, the boxes will also contain hamburger and
hot dogs, with boxes of cereal, macaroni, rice and canned goods
added to provide other meals during the holiday week. |
