Us... Local History |
Service to people is the mainstay of The Salvation Army. Yet it is
interesting to trace the history by location and change. The concept
of the Corps' service to our area for more than 100 years brings broad
perspective to this history.
| •
The Salvation Army began serving the people of the Green Bay
area on February 14, 1891. The first location was in the Hagemeister
Building at 212 Pine Street. (This is where the new downtown
Baylake Bank facility is being developed.) |
| |
| •
We cannot trace all the locations where local service were headquartered
in the earliest years, but the service is known to be continuous.
Between 1915 and 1938, The Salvation Army moved seven times,
always staying in a downtown Green Bay facility. Some documents
trace The Salvation Army to these early locations (year indicated): |
| |
| Jan.
1915: Corner of Pine and Madison |
| March
1916: 709 Cherry St.(now Aon Risk Services) |
| June
1918: 228 Pine St. |
| Feb.
1922: 1140 Doty St. |
| Jan.
1932: 219 Pine St. |
| Nov.
1938: 201 Pine St. |
|

| •
In 1946, The Salvation Army moved to the West side of Green
Bay into a tent. It is unknown where the tent was located or
how long meetings were held there. |
| |
| •
In 1948, property was purchased on the West side at 235 South
Chestnut. Until the building was completed on Chestnut, The
Salvation Army was housed temporarily at 1109 Main St. |
| |
| •
The site at 235 South Chestnut was the location of operations
until the present site, 626 Union Court , was dedicated on May
5, 1974. |
| |
| •
The Salvation Army of Green Bay has had 56 commanding officers
and 49 assisting officers since its beginning in 1891. |
| |
| •
A building expansion was completed in 1993, allowing more
and better service to be provided to the people of Green Bay. |
Today, The Salvation
Army of Green Bay provides programs and services which meet the physical,
emotional and spiritual needs of the community from its corps facility
at 626 Union Court. The Salvation Army is regarded as a stable and
respected partner in service to the residents of the near west side
area as well as the entire community. As Green Bay continues near
west side redevelopment, our participation is a commitment to the
service of people in transition. |
