| How Holiday
Assistance Is Determined: Interviewing
|
| |
| Individuals in need
are asked to register for the special holiday assistance in
advance and separately from their requests for emergency needs
throughout the year. This is a VERY IMPORTANT step because it
allows us to make projections and prepare adequately. |
| |
| The
items individuals can receive fall into several categories: |
- Food
Baskets: Last year, we provided 2,552 families
with holiday food baskets.
|
- Toys
and Books: Last year, more than 15.849 toys and
games were distributed for nearly 6,000 children and teens.
One or more books can also be selected at our Christmas
Distribution Days by parents for each child from the Give-A-Kid-A-Book
collection program run by The Friends of Brown County.
|
- Adopt-a-Family
Program: A number of local corporations and individual
families choose to anonymously "adopt" families
for the holidays. Families are randomly selected from all
applicants to receive donated packages of gifts and food
rather than any other assistance.
|
| In addition
to the distribution of these items, there are several additional
programs that are traditionally offered by The Salvation Army
in Green Bay during the Christmas season. |
| |
- Coats
for Kids:
A special collection organized by the Cumulus radio stations
and FOX 11 TV helps provide more than 4,000 coats which
are distributed for children and teens during the fall of
each year.
|
- Special
Holiday Meals: Special festive meals are also
held during the Hot Lunch Program at The Salvation Army
Community Corps building, generally the day before the holiday.
|
|
- Silver
Bells: A special giving tree is set up for shoppers
at Bay Park Square Mall provide gifts for seniors who are
alone.
|
- Nursing
Home Visits: Messages of love and gifts of fruit
and care items are given to residents at more than 20 area
nursing homes.
