What
We Do... Community & Youth Programs...
Sals Supper Club |
SAL’s
Supper Club is a school year program for young people at “The
SAL” where a nutritious evening meal is provided and an atmosphere
of belonging is encouraged.
The youth recreation
programs at The Salvation Army have long attracted young people.
The gym at 626 Union Court has always provided a great place for
neighborhood children to play or “hang out” under supervised
attention. Staff members have served as coaches for sports and for
life, making friends and talking with kids about what’s going
on in school and with their families. The computer lab, provided
through the fundraising efforts of The Salvation Army Women’s
Auxiliary, offers more than 12 computer stations and is a very popular
spot with both youth and adults.
When staff members
saw that kids were staying longer than a few hours after school
(the building’s open until 8:30 p.m.) and apparently having
no evening meal, The Salvation Army decided to better meet the children’s
total needs by providing a healthy supper meal.
Five days each
week, an evening dinner is served to children at The Salvation Army
Community Corps Center between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. Balanced foods
and good companionship at mealtime bring a sense of stability to
these young people.
Meals, planned
by Salvation Army staff to offer a healthy sustenance, usually include
soup, a hot meat, vegetables, fruit, bread, butter and milk. Foods
that children like, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, casseroles (blending
vegetables in with meat) and pizza are served.
Volunteers are
actively being recruited to come and visit with the kids during
the supper hour and perhaps to stay afterward for an hour of sports
or computer time. These volunteer “mentors” and the
healthy foods fill important needs, helping young people to grow
stronger physically and emotionally. The program continues to grow.
