| What
We Do... Seniors Program |
The
Salvation Army Corps Community Center offers many things for the
area’s seniors — friendship and support prime among
them.
The seniors
program includes a variety of activities — bingo and card
games, crafts, exercise in the gym, field trips with other seniors
and with mixed age groups.
Past destinations
for the excursions have included county fairs, the zoo and amusement
parks throughout Wisconsin, trips to the House On The Rock and a
Wisconsin Dells boat ride, as well as attendance at performances
by groups such as the Chantelles.
The seniors
make and sell crafts, including traditional crafts and crocheting,
as well as hand-painting, stuffed animals and dolls, rugs and quilts.
Staff and senior
volunteers go to area nursing and retirement homes monthly to lead
sing-a-longs with residents.
A critical service
for many seniors is the weekly shopping trip, providing transportation
to and from the bank, grocery store, department store and other
stops, including help getting packages into the house.
There’s
also a summer camp session for seniors at the Army Lake Camp at
East Troy, Wisconsin.
But, perhaps
most importantly, The Salvation Army provides a chance to socialize,
to get out, visit with friends, share lunch at one of the monthly
potluck lunches and fight the battle against the loneliness of aging.
We also have a Hmong
Elders program that meets twice a month from 6pm - 8pm on Tuesdays
for social and educational activities. We also try to get on an
outing one Saturday a month or every other month.
