What
We Do... Special Holiday Assistance...
Toys, Books & Games |
Partnerships
are very important with our needs for approximately 30,000 Christmas
gifts of various values during the holiday season.
The
Salvation Army Toy Shop offers toys and games for children from
infancy to age 18. As donations allow, we offer the parent the ability
to select one major toy, one game, and three stocking stuffer toys.
Toys and games
come from many donors – it’s heartwarming to see a family
walking in to The Salvation Army during the holiday season, with
little ones carrying new toys they have selected to give for another
boy or girl. We greatly appreciate the hundreds of dolls, cars,
bicycles, basketballs, CDs, perfumes, etc. that are given with love
by so many.
Many years ago,
the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve began a national "Toys for Tots"
program. In Green Bay, we have benefited from a partnership for
this program with a local reserve unit, the Detachment Bulk Fuel
Company Bravo, 6th Engineer Support Battalion. During Christmas,
this program offers a big WIN for local children from needy families.
The Marines and Reservists establish collection arrangements with
more hundreds of area businesses, promote donations with WBAY-TV
2, pick up toys from the sites all during the holiday season and
then transport them to us. We also appreciate their help during
the long hours of set-up and distribution.
WFRV-TV
5 has also been a long time partner, with the emphasis
of their annual “Care and Share” toy collections now
being placed on the needs of teens, a group that is sometimes forgotten.
This special emphasis by one partner is important.
The Telephone
Pioneers, a large group of area retired telephone company employees,
has been helpful to us by volunteering to sort toys into age categories,
so that we can make it easier and quicker for parents to select
something appropriate for their child during the final Distribution
Days. These items are stored and sorted at a donated site and transported
to ShopKo Hall for the Distribution Days through the kindness of
Schneider National and the National Guard.
During the Distribution
Days, parents also are encouraged to select books appropriate for
their children through the “Give-A-Kid-Book” program.
This special annual collection is organized and managed by the Friends
of the Brown County Library, a great partner in service
to local children. In 2004, the friends handed out more than 12,300
books at ShopKo Hall. |
